When the rains arrive in Kerala, most of us enjoy the cooler weather. We leave the windows open when we can, make another cup of tea, and enjoy the sound of rain outside.

Inside the house, though, it’s a different story.

Over the years, we’ve noticed that the same problems appear in almost every home during the monsoon. Mud gets tracked into the living room, sofas start feeling damp, bathrooms take longer to dry, and somewhere in the house there’s usually that familiar musty smell.

The good news is that most of these problems are easy to prevent if you catch them early.

The floor gets dirty much faster

It only takes one trip outside to bring half the garden back in on your shoes.

Instead of mopping several times a day, try stopping the dirt before it enters the house. A good doormat outside and another just inside the door make a noticeable difference. If everyone leaves wet footwear near the entrance, you’ll save yourself plenty of cleaning later.

Your sofa might look clean, but it isn’t

One thing people often don’t realise is how much moisture fabric absorbs during the rainy season.

We’ve cleaned sofas that looked perfectly fine but had a damp smell because dust and moisture had settled deep inside the fabric. Air fresheners hide the smell for a while, but they don’t solve the problem.

Vacuum your sofa regularly and keep the cushions dry. If the smell doesn’t go away, it’s usually time for a proper upholstery cleaning.

Bathrooms need a little extra attention

During the summer, a bathroom floor dries quite quickly.

During the monsoon, water stays around much longer. That means soap residue, mildew and stains build up faster.

After using the bathroom, leave the exhaust fan running for a few minutes or keep a window open whenever the weather allows. Wiping away standing water only takes a minute but makes a big difference.

Don’t ignore that small patch of mould

Mould rarely appears in the middle of a wall.

It usually starts quietly behind wardrobes, near windows, under the kitchen sink or behind curtains where air doesn’t move very much.

Once it spreads, cleaning becomes much more difficult. A quick inspection every couple of weeks can save you a lot of effort later.

Let fresh air in whenever you can

Kerala’s humidity is what causes most cleaning problems during the rainy season.

Even twenty or thirty minutes of fresh air after a shower can help remove trapped moisture from the house. Ceiling fans and exhaust fans also help keep air moving when the weather doesn’t.

This is when a deep clean makes the biggest difference

Daily cleaning keeps a home looking tidy.

A deep clean deals with everything that daily cleaning misses, the dust behind furniture, the grime around bathroom fittings, the corners under beds, ceiling fans, window tracks and upholstery.

Many of our customers ask us to deep clean their homes either just before the monsoon starts or once the season is over. It’s one of the easiest ways to reset the house and get rid of the dirt and moisture that gradually build up over several months.

Enjoy the rain, not the cleaning

The rainy season should be about spending time with family, watching the rain from the veranda and enjoying the cooler weather, not worrying about damp smells or muddy floors.

A few simple habits can keep your home fresh throughout the season. And if the cleaning starts to feel like too much, we’re always happy to help.

Since 2018, Mop & Clean has been helping families across Kochi keep their homes clean through every season. Whether it’s a home deep clean, sofa cleaning, carpet cleaning or preparing a house before family arrives from abroad, we’re just a phone call away.

Because the best thing about coming home during the rainy season is enjoying it, not cleaning it.
